As India gained independence, along with the birth of a new nation, the industrial giant we know today as Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) was also born, diversifying from steel trading to manufacturing and allied activities.
Steel trading continued to be a core activity for the M&M group, post-independence, and was handled by its Intertrade Division. Post liberalisation, Intertrade division also begun offering value-added services for steel processing which gave birth to MSSCL – Mahindra Steel Service Centre Ltd. – located at Kanhe (near Pune). MSSCL was the first steel service centre in the organized sector in India and focused on Just–in–Time (JIT) delivery of processed steel to its customers, a concept hitherto unknown in the country.
Around the same time, the group felt that since its steel trading and processing operations had expanded considerably, it may help to convert the steel vertical into an independent subsidiary. Mahindra Intertrade was thus born in 1999.
